With the progress of the iron and steel industry in the world, blast furnaces are developing towards large-scale, high-efficiency and long-life, and gradually adopt new smelting technologies such as oxygen-enriched coal injection, high-air temperature operation, and high-pressure furnace roof. Significant changes have taken place in the working conditions of the lining of the blast furnace, and the service life has been greatly reduced, generally only 5-6 years. Especially for the lower part of the blast furnace body, the waist and the abdomen, the service life is shorter. In order to adapt to this development, the refractories used in blast furnaces have also undergone major changes. New long-life refractories and high-efficiency refractories have gradually been applied, and the life of blast furnaces has been gradually improved.

At present, the world's longest life blast furnace is located at Onesteel's Waia plant in South Australia. The blast furnace was opened in 1980 and overhauled in 2004, which lasted 24 years. No. 6 blast furnace at Chiba Plant of Kawasaki Steel, Japan, 20 years and 9 months. In China, it is generally 5-8 years, with a few reaching 10 years or even more than 10 years. WISCO's No. 5 blast furnace opened in 1991 and was shut down for overhaul in June 2007, with a lifespan of 16 years.

According to the operating conditions and damage characteristics of modern blast furnace linings, it is required that the refractory materials must have:

1. Good high temperature performance, good thermal stability under long-term high temperature;

2. The strength at room temperature and high temperature should be high, and the wear resistance should be good;

3. High density, good thermal conductivity, low apparent porosity, small shrinkage at high temperature;

4. It can resist the violent erosion and erosion of molten iron, molten slag, blast furnace gas and soot under high temperature and high pressure;

5. The external dimensions of the refractory bricks are accurate, which can ensure that the brick joints meet the specified requirements.

The production of high-quality refractory materials must have high-quality refractory raw materials, reasonable process formulas, strict quality control, necessary testing equipment and many professional talents.
